In a recent feature, news and media website Bloomberg ordered pies from across the country and taste-tested them to determine the best mail-order pies in America. Among the delicious pies in the top ten of the rankings were the S’mores Pie from Butter & Scotch in Brooklyn and the Salted Caramel Apple Pie from acclaimed pie bakery Four & Twenty Blackbirds.

One of the most notable pies on the list was one that takes a sweet bread concept in a new direction. Breads Bakery in New York City offers a Babka Pie on its holiday menu. This unique take on its chocolate babka mimics the traditional eastern European bread that is filled with chocolate, nuts, and cinnamon.

“Not everyone considers this a pie, but it’s shaped like one and it’s definitely the best chocolate babka around,” says Bloomberg food editor Kate Krader. “Slathered with Nutella and studded with chocolate chips, it has incredible layers and levels of chocolate. Forgo the fork and knife, and pull it apart with your hands.”

The Babka Pie from Breads Bakery has been featured on The Today Show, and has been named to New York Magazine’s Best of New York list. In addition to the Babka Pie, other products that Breads Bakery features for Thanksgiving are Bourbon Pecan Pie, Pumpkin Quiche, and a Harvest Babka that includes gruyere, zucchini, sweet potato, and onion.
