2018 is about to hit its close, and year-end lists of top food trends are populating the Internet. Perhaps the biggest name in Internet companies, Google, recently released its own rankings of the trends in a variety of search categories, including food.
The Year in Search for 2018 looks at the topics people were looking at through Google search. News, people, pop culture, and a host of other topics are covered, with the World Cup being the top searched item this year.
As far as food is concerned, keto appeared to be on the minds of many in 2018. Out of the top ten searches in the food category, half of them involve keto foods. The ketogenic (keto) diet is low-carbohydrate diet which is meant to help people burn fat more effectively.
Keto diets involve foods that are high in fat, only moderately high in protein, and of course low in carbs and sugary foods. Among the Google searches that involved these types of foods were keto pancakes, keto cheesecake, keto cookies, keto chili, and keto brownies.
Unicorn cakes were the biggest trending food topic of 2018. These colorful desserts are the star of social media, and are a natural evolution of the rainbow trend. Many credit ‘90s nostalgia for this recent emergence of this flavor trend that is not really a flavor at all.
