In 2019, Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer will be celebrating its 20th anniversary of raising funds for breast cancer research. This annual event in and around Boston, Massachusetts sees local eateries and retailers participate by offering a special dessert or sweet, with funds from those items' sales going to breast cancer research.
Several bakeries will be a part of this annual fundraiser, which takes place May 6-12, 2019. Flour Bakery + Café, one of the biggest names in baking, will be participating at several of its locations around the area. Among the other local businesses helping to raise money are Donut Express and Custom Cakes, Mariposa Bakery, Sofra Bakery & Café, Tatte Bakery & Café, Topsfield Bakeshop - Official Home of The Whoo(pie) Wagon, and Treat Cupcake Bar.
Money raised from the dessert sales during this year’s event will benefit the research of Dr. Rachel Freedman, MD, MPH, a prominent physician researcher at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
“The funding provided by organizations like Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer is crucial to the execution of important research which otherwise would go unfunded,” says Dr. Freedman. “As the availability of government and foundation-based funding has become increasingly scarce on a national level, researchers like me, who are struggling to develop clinical trials for older patients - an area of research that has been vastly under subsidized - are so appreciative of this support.”
Boston Bakes was started twenty years ago so that anyone could make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.
“What began with 42 pastry chefs committed to donating their culinary creations to raise money for breast cancer research, has grown to over 250 of Boston’s favorite dining spots and shops participating in our annual event,” says Carol Sneider, Founder and President of Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer. “During one week, anyone can help raise much needed funds simply by ordering dessert or purchasing a sweet at one or more of our participating locations – it’s that easy.”
