The rise of cannabis consumption, particularly in states where it has been legalized, has led to increased opportunities for retailers.
According to The NPD Group’s SnackTrack information, which monitors the consumption of ready-to-eat convenience-oriented snack foods in the U.S., several different snacks have increased in consumption in states that have legalized recreational marijuana use.
The NPD Group reports that brownie consumption has increased 107 percent in those states compared to the times before legalization. Similarly, chewy candies grew by 17 percent after legalization, and fruit snacks also increased in consumption.
“These correlations are in line with what we’ve known anecdotally for some time about recreational pot usage and can point to growth opportunities should more states allow it,” says Darren Seifer, NPD Food and Beverage Industry Analyst.
We’ve already seen a rise in the usage of cannabis in foods and beverages across the country. In the National Restaurant Association’s annual survey of American Culinary Federation chefs and members, it was discovered that the top food trend for 2019 would be cannabis-infused foods and beverages.
