On Tuesday, December 3, Starbucks announced the latest addition to its holiday beverage lineup. The Irish Cream Cold Brew is now available at participating Starbucks locations in the United States and Canada.
The beverage is made with Starbucks Cold Brew coffee and Irish cream syrup over ice, topped with a frothy cap of vanilla sweet cream cold foam and a dusting of cocoa powder. The flavors of vanilla and cocoa complement the cold brew for a festive holiday beverage.
“It pairs so well with cold brew because of the chocolate flavor in the Irish cream and the cocoa notes from the coffee,” says Erin Marinan, product developer for Starbucks R&D. “I think about that customer who’s in the middle of work or shopping, and this will help get them into the holiday spirit for the rest of the day.”
Cold coffee has been a big part of the Starbucks strategy in recent years. The cold beverage lineup now makes up more than half of U.S. Starbucks beverage sales. Cold foam in particular has been an inventive addition atop beverages in Starbucks stores since April 2018, starting with Cold Foam Cascara Cold Brew. It has been followed by the popular Salted Cream Cold Brew and Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew.
“Cold foam has been key for us from the innovation side of product development,” Marinan says. “It highlights our coffee craft with a great creamy texture and those beautiful layers. It’s adding a little bit of flavor in a way that’s unique to Starbucks.”
