Sourhouse, a business that looks to help people bake more sourdough bread by creating thoughtfully designed baking tools, has teamed up with other Asheville, North Carolina companies as part of a coalition to launch the 1% for AVL initiative that creates a way for people nationwide to support Hurricane Helene recovery efforts.
Through the initiative, people throughout the country (and world) can support the rebuilding efforts by purchasing everything from home baking tools to artisanal foods – with every sale directly contributing to the region’s recovery. The founding members will donate at least one percent of their November and December sales to relief efforts throughout Western North Carolina. Businesses can join the coalition by visiting here.

“Our community of entrepreneurs, innovators, makers, and artisans has always been at the heart of what makes Asheville magical,” says Sourhouse co-founder Erik Fabian. “We came together because this is our home, and this initiative will give people everywhere a direct way to help us rebuild it.”
Hurricane Helene has left an unprecedented wake of destruction in Western North Carolina, with damages estimated in the billions of dollars and more than 100 lives lost. Countless local businesses have been severely impacted or destroyed, leaving many community members without jobs and essential services.
The coalition pledges to donate at least 1% of its November and December sales to recovery efforts in Asheville and surrounding Western North Carolina communities. Each business will document its support through January 5th, 2025, to demonstrate the collective impact of its efforts. The initiative allows for flexible resource allocation to address the most pressing community needs as they arise.
Participating businesses will collaborate through shared communication channels and unified branding under the 1% for AVL logo.
