Social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter have been sweeping cyberspace for a few years now. From students to Baby Boomers to multi-million dollar corporations, these sites are keeping people connected.
And bakers and decorators are no exception. Social networking is a place where bakers and decorators can keep up with trends, share ideas and create a sense of community that they wouldn't otherwise have.
Decorator Amelia Carbine has a Facebook fan page for her cake business, Frosted Fantasy Cakes, as well as a blog. Last week, her Facebook page garnered 1,000 fans, and to celebrate, she announced a contest on Facebook and her blog. She asked users to post their best and worst cake experiences. "Cake is always linked to momentous occasions whether it be weddings, birthdays, baby showers or anything," she said on her blog, asking for stories from both customers and decorators. All those who posted stories were entered into a drawing, in which she gave her Raspberry Cake recipe to five winners.
Her contest garnered 21 stories on the Fan page. Some of the stories included a baker who accidentally used Tablespoons instead of teaspoons in a recipe; a decorator whose Hello Kitty cake for her daughter's birthday was compared to one from the Cake Boss; and an inspirational note from a baker who just opened her shop eight months ago and lives for bringing joy to people through her creations.
