West End Bistro in West Haven, Connecticut is attracting a lot of attention online for its pizza donuts. The café began serving the specialty product a little over a month ago, and it has quickly become a viral sensation.

According to West End Bistro owner and chef Jeff Lamberti, the pizza donut combines the best of both pizza and donuts. It’s a focaccia dough, roll out with an old, empty Old Grand-Dad Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey bottle (wrapped in plastic), stuff with mozzarella, fontinella and Parmesan cheese, and then deep-fried.

After that, it’s dipped in Sunday sauce (a tomato sauce), sprinkled with a mixture of four dried, cured Italian meats (capicola, soppresata, genoa and pepperoni), Parmesan crisp and fresh parsley, and baked for a few minutes.

The warm and tasty treat is sold for $7.95 – and it definitely looks worth it. West End Bistro also makes a spicy vegetarian version topped with olives, capers, hot and sweet peppers, red onions and Parmesan.

Once the pizza donut was posted to Instagram, it became extremely popular almost overnight. Given its look and taste, that’s no surprise.
