George Montilio is following in his father’s footsteps by creating a cake to honor the legacy of John F. Kennedy. In 1961, Ernest Montilio baked a cake for a presidential ball at the former president’s inauguration.

To celebrate what would have been JFK’s 100th birthday, Montilio made a cake replica of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, which was unveiled Monday, May 29. Employees at Montilio’s Bakery in Brockton worked from Thursday, May 25 to Sunday, May 28 in order to finish the cake in time.

The cake replica is seven feet by eight feet and weighs 400 pounds. It took 180 pounds of sugar, 120 pounds of flour, and 80 pounds of eggs in order to make.

The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston was hosting a five-day Memorial Day Weekend celebration to commemorate the important date. The Presidential Library was dedicated in 1979 and is one of the most well-known presidential libraries in the country.

The Montilo’s have a long history with the Kennedys. In addition to the cake made for JFK’s inauguration ball, the family has also created wedding, birthday, and other event cakes for the Kennedys. As George Montilio tells The Enterprise, “I feel so lucky to be in this family and keep the tradition going. We go way back. We did a lot of cakes for the Kennedys.”
