Boar's Head Provisions Co., Inc., one of the nation's leading manufacturers of premium delicatessen meats and cheeses, announced the winning sandwich from their "Five Borough Sandwich Battle." To raise awareness about the importance of sodium reduction in your everyday diet, Boar's Head launched a search for the best New York City sandwich. Inspired by each of the NYC boroughs, Boar's Head created five different sandwich recipes made with Boar's Head lower sodium meats and cheeses – The Bronx Bomber, The Staten Island Ferry, The Park Avenue, The Brooklyn Bridge and The Airport Special. Each sandwich reflected the unique personality of the borough it represented, while showcasing a healthier alternative.
Sandwich fans across the country voted over the past week on the Boar's Head Facebook page to nominate their favorite NYC sandwich. Competition was fierce, but the Bronx Bomber sandwich made with Boar's Head Low Sodium Deluxe Oven Roasted Beef and Boar's Head 42% Lower Sodium Provolone, was victorious with 40 percent of the votes. Boar's Head will now be taking to the streets, bringing free sandwich samples made with Boar's Head lower sodium meats and cheeses to the mouths of New Yorkers at locations across the city, including Penn Station, Times Square, Rockefeller Center and Grand Central.
Boar's Head was the first deli meat and cheese manufacturer to sign on to the National Salt Reduction Initiative (NSRI), announced earlier this year by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. With a longstanding commitment to producing healthy, high quality foods, Boar's Head began meeting the 2012 category sodium targets 25 years ago, recognizing the important role sodium plays in one's diet.
"Sodium is a serious issue," said RuthAnn LaMore, Director of Communications for Boar's Head. "It's important for consumers to know they have heart-healthy and delicious deli options and Boar's Head is committed to serving our customers the finest products."
Most Americans eat almost twice the recommended limit of salt each day. Diets high in salt increase blood pressure, which is a factor in heart attack and stroke, the nation's leading causes of preventable death. In a recent yearly statistic, major cardiovascular disease (including heart attacks, strokes and other diseases of the heart) took the lives of 800,000 nationwide including 24,000 New York City residents alone.
Earlier this year, Boar's Head developed a "Launch Your Own Assault on Salt" campaign that encourages salt sensible food choices, including an entire line of Boar's Head lower sodium cold cuts. These include some of the brand's most popular products: 42% Lower Sodium Deluxe Ham, Golden Classic 42% Lower Sodium Oven Roasted Chicken Breast, No Salt Added Swiss Cheese, and Lite Beef Frankfurters. Consumers are encouraged launch their own assault on salt and ask for Boar's Head lower sodium meats and cheeses at their local delicatessen.
