Located in the heart of historic downtown Negaunee, Mich., close to the Iron Ore Heritage Trail in the northernmost pocket of Michigan, Midtown Bakery & Cafe is open again after reshuffling its takeout and delivery options, a move necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The bakery reopened June 6, now offering soups, salads, sandwiches, and signature bakery items including its “almost world famous” cheesecake.
Owner Marybeth Kurtz, who once competed on the Food Network’s “Winner Cake All,” says things are running smoothly with the newest cleaning guidelines, which is something her restaurant staff already makes a priority.
“Wiping down things with sanitizer and making sure things are clean is something that always happens in a restaurant,” she said.
For the time being, the bakery is open only for takeout and delivery to three venues: Negaunee, Ishpeming and Marquette. Staff is asking anyone entering the bakery to wear a mask and take all necessary precautions.
Midtown Bakery & Café is widely known locally for its "almost world famous cheesecake," as well as signature specials like German chocolate cupcakes. Mining Journal presented the bakery with its “Readers’ Choice Award for Best Desserts” for seven years in a row.
Catering and corporate luncheon accounts are among the bakery’s clients, which also features wedding cakes.
“We specialize in over 300 flavors of cheesecake, as well as a wide variety of cakes, tortes, pies, bars and cookies,” Kurtz says. “Gluten free and vegan desserts are available too.”
