Cupcakes are gaining so much popularity worldwide that Great Britain is preparing for their own National Cupcake Week on Sept. 17-23.

On Sept. 17, Nationalcupcakeweek.co.uk plans to coordinate a “digital shout out” about National Cupcake Week via Twitter, starting at 8 a.m. The site will be posting #nationalcupcakeweek messages through Twitter. The aim is to drive awareness, cupcake sales and orders by making #nationalcupcakeweek a top-trending topic in the United Kingdom for the third year running.

According to the website, Brits consumed 23.5 million pounds worth of cupcakes last year.

There’s even a National Cupcake Championship, which this year took place on July 2 at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.

Nearly 60 professional cupcake makers competed across seven separate categories for the title of National Cupcake Champion 2012.

The 2012 National Cupcake Champion award went to Emily Johnson of the Upsy Daisy Bakery and Tea Room in Hammersmith, West London, for her Mojito Cupcake, which also was the individual category winner for best cupcake made with alcohol.
