Like the swallows at San Juan Capistrano, competitors at the Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show stream in carrying with them some of the most amazing works of sugar art. Last year the bar was set high and there was no disappointment. Thousands of viewers filed past this public display marveling at the exquisite work on display.
When awards were finally made and Vivian Pham collected her cache of amazing prizes those same competitors streamed away bubbling and chatting; saying, and I quote, “Ballet 2013 I am so excited about that theme I can’t wait to register.” Registrar Loydene Barrett reported, “47 registrations.” by January 1 and the rules were not even posted or finalized.”
According to event organizer Kerry Vincent, Food Network Challenge Judge and Master Sugar Artist, “My love affair with my treasured sponsors started twenty years ago and without them it would not matter how hard I worked or the volunteers contribute, simply put; there would be no show. In 2013 we celebrate our 20th Anniversary! It is a pinch me moment? It seems just like yesterday that this all started, but I do know we have tread an amazing path together and I hope we can continue this momentum for years to come.”

PRESENTERS
This year famed artists Julia Usher and Bronwen Weber will share their considerable expertise to educate and entertain artists and visitors. Both are promising spectacular presentations and personally I can’t wait to be “wowed!
ARTISTS achievements generated over the past 20 years are unprecedented, some have found their way in to television, teaching, become company ambassadors and presenters, a long way from the sleepy art of the past.
THIS event, that has become a passion in my life, has taken on a life of its own! Strolling through this maze of edible art, visitors (amateur and professional alike) can soak up a quintessential experience - the ultimate inspiration for consumers to create the cake of their dreams. Beautifully presented, there is something for everyone, young or old.
WINNER’S KEYS
READ the rules properly, do not skim or wing it.
CREATE a cake that echoes the theme effectively and is unique, not someone else’s work or a knock-off.
IRON the table linen.
CHECK to see the cake is stacked evenly and on the perpendicular.
NEVER has the perfect creation of an edible flower been so crucial, the placement of a sugar ribbon so nerve wracking or the stacking of carefully cultivated tiers so vital.
HAVE fun, win or lose it is a cake and there is always next year.

Pointe Work
No prima ballerina ever made it into the spotlight without lots of practice in the fundamentals – and cookie decorating is no different!
Here, Julia lays the important groundwork for her cookie party, starting first with how to approach multi-dimensional cookie and tablescape designs.
She’ll share the actual designs for this party’s projects, including a bedazzled 4-D music box with moving cookie parts, a ballerina-mobile, and a cookie-scope centerpiece that takes on a whole new look once it’s set into motion.
She’ll also demonstrate several of the key decorating techniques used to create the extraordinary detail on these pieces, such as needlepoint work, stenciling, airbrushing, stamping, drawing, and painting a scientific viewpoint

Raising the Barre
With the groundwork for her party well laid, Julia raises the (cookie) barre – so to speak - by showing how to create simple 3-D cookie designs that stand out from the usual cookies lying flat on a plate. In this segment, Julia assembles the music box pieces decorated in Part 1 into edible party favors, focusing on important cookie construction techniques such as trimming, mitering, gluing, and sandwiching cookies on sticks and other supports. For an extra something sweet, Julia may even throw a simple 3-D cookie place card into the mix!

Finishing techniques applied, and distractionary measures should very closely resemble a mythological beast
Will continue to develop the attitude and tone of the scene and audience
Finishing techniques will be discussed, fillers, refinement and decluttering will happen continuously
The sea monster will be scary and lifelike, so a calming palette is anticipated to avoid scaring the crowd
11:45 a.m. - 1:15 p.m. - JULIA USHER AWARD-WINNING COOKIE DESIGNER EXTRAORDINAIRE
Grand Jeté
Julia takes a giant leap in this segment to aerial cookie designs, like the ballet slipper place cards, ballerina garlands, and mobiles designed to fill in the negative space above and behind her cookie table. She’ll demonstrate several important suspended cookie decorating techniques, including stringing, sandwiching (again), speed-drying, and how to balance the overall composition.
As Julia completes these flying feats, her able team of assistants will begin work on the table’s pièce de résistance: the spinning cookie centerpiece.

In this final segment, Julia challenges herself and her team to a cookie scope - a 4-D (spinning) cookie design –never before attempted by Julia, or possibly in all of cookie space! Hang onto the edges of your seats as Julia and her team apply the final cookie touches to this work of art before setting it on the cookie table and launching it into motion.
