Sugar Bowl Bakery, one of the largest family and minority owned bakeries operating in the United States, announced earlier this week the launch of an innovative compostable packaging for its organic line at the International-Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association show in Houston, TX. The decision to incorporate cutting edge compostable packaging for the organic bakery products is a continuation of the company's strategy to have a positive impact on the environment.
"Sustainability is at the core of our business, and we are committed to making the company more efficient, serving our customers better and making a difference in the environment," says Andrew Ly, CEO of Sugar Bowl Bakery. "Creating compostable packaging has been a goal of ours for quite some time now, and I'm happy to say we have finally made our dreams a reality. We are hopeful that our recent innovations will encourage other brands in the industry to follow suit."
The components of the new organic packaging are sourced locally when possible. For example, the recycled paperboard used for the carton is produced using the waste paper from local retailers within a 150 mile radius of the paperboard plant, which is just 30 miles south of Sugar Bowl Bakery's Hayward, CA plant. Each component of the package has been verified compostable, even the wrapper around the cakes and cookies. The compostable packaging will debut with the bakery's popular Organic Brownie Bites and Organic Madeleines.
"We are proud to be among the first to embrace compostable packaging in our bakery department, and we believe this aligns with an organic consumer's intent to reduce planetary impact with responsibly sourced products," says Pete Thomsen, Directory of Sales at Sugar Bowl Bakery.
