Scott Baker, president and founder of 5 Generation Bakers, the producers of Jenny Lee breads, was one of three Pittsburgh-area executives honored by Smart Business magazine. The awards for “innovation,” “impact,“ and “sustainability” are given in the 14 regions which Smart Business covers, Pittsburgh being one of them.
“Sustainability,” for which Baker’s company was honored, was based upon a “…combination of innovation and impact (which) lead to a sustainable, scalable business that develops and fosters community,” said the official press release. It went on to note that Baker had redeveloped property in McKees Rocks, PA, quadrupling the company’s production capacity. It moved into the new facility in the spring of 2016.
Aside from additional, needed jobs for the neighborhood, the facility provided a 400-square foot retail area offering fresh food for locals including the needy and persons without transportation. “The local area met the definitions of a food desert,” said a company spokesperson. “It was a needed enhancement to the community.”
The awards ceremony was held November 10 at the Fairmont Pittsburgh Hotel.
