Waitrose, a chain of British supermarkets, recently discovered some interesting foods that will be consumed overseas next year. In its annual Food and Drink Report, several predictions were offered. Some of these may even make their way to the United States if positively received.
1. Vegetable yogurt
Vegetables such as carrot, beetroot, sweet potato, and tomato will be infused with yogurt for a savory and slightly sweet flavor.
2. Watermelon water
This cold-pressed watermelon juice has the backing of pop star Beyonce (who bought a stake in it earlier this year). Natural hydration is the selling point, with the drink being comprised of watermelon flesh and rind, plus lemon.
3. Poke
Poke is a raw fish salad – usually tuna or salmon - marinated with lime juice, soy sauce and sesame seeds, which is gaining popularity in the UK.
Other rising flavors in the upcoming year include seaweed, coconut flour, and seed/grains.
"As a nation we're expressing ourselves through food as never before. From healthy eating, to the explosion of food photography on social media, to our desire to entertain others through cooking - food is today's hottest social currency; through it, we tell others about ourselves,” says Waitrose managing director Rob Collins.
Healthy eating is not the only food trend, however. Extreme indulgence remains very popular, with many taking it one step further, like with Australian-style “freakshake” ice-cream desserts.
